Introduction to GIS Using ArcView 9 – ArcMap
1.Start ArcMap. The “Start using ArcMap” window will display. Click “OK.”

2.The Data View window will be displayed without layers.
3.Provide descriptive information to this GIS map as follows:
- a) From the File pull-down menu choose “Map properties”.
- b) Add a title, subject, author, and keywords.

4. Set the Data Source Options to “Store relative path names to data sources.”(This choice facilitates transferring ArcVeiw projects to remote memory devices along with the datasets.)

5. Set the Data Frame Properties as follows:
- a) From the View pull-down menu choose “Data Frame Properties.”
- b) Choose the “Coordinate System” tab.
- c) Navigate to the “Predefined, Projected Coordinate Systems UTM, Nad 1983” folder icon, and choose “NAD 1983 UTM Zone 14” map projection.
- d) Click “Apply” and then “OK.”

6. Add GIS layers to the data frame as follows:
- a) Click the “Add Data” button.
- b) Navigate to: C:\Turtle Mountain Project, and load all six layers: ND Forestry Service.shp, ND Game and Fish.shp, ND Land Deartment.shp, Roads – County and Township.shp, Roads – State and Federal.shp, US FWS.shp, Water – Drainage.shp and Water – Surface.shp.
- c) All the layers will automatically be displayed.

7. Edit the display appearance of the US FWS layer as follows:
- a) Right click on the layer name in the table of contents and choose “Properties.”
- b) Choose the “General” tab.
- c) Change the Layer Name to “US Fish & Wildlife.” Click “Apply.”

8. Layer appearances can be changed as follows:
- a) Double-click on the layer symbol in the Layers list. A “Symbol Selector” window will open. Edit each layer as desired. Note: Make each polygon layer “hollow” so image layers below are visible. Layer boundaries can be colored.

9. Label the Places in Turtle Mountains layer as follows:
- a) Right-click on the layer name to the Layer Properties window.
- b) Click the “Labels” tab in the Layer Properties window.
- c) Put a check mark in the box to the left of “Label Features in this layer.”
- d) For Label Field choose “Name.”
- e) Click the “Symbol” tab to display the “Label Style Selector.”
- f) Choose “Town” and click “OK.”
- g) In the Layer Properties window click “Apply.”
- h) Click “OK” to dismiss the Layer Properties window.
10. Save the map periodically to avoid losing changes made to the project.
11. Choose “Save As” from the File pull-down menu. Choose a location, type a name for the map, and click “OK.”
12. Add the NAIP images for Turtle Mountain Area:
- a) Navigate to the NAIP Imagery folder.
- b) Add the imagery from one year. (Select the image name and click “Add.)

13. To eliminate the “Black” color around the edge of the images:
- a) Open the Layer Properties window for one of the image layers.
- b) Click the “Symbology” tab.
- c) Put a check mark in the “Display Background Value (R,G,B).” Choose “No Color.”
- d) Click “OK.”

14. Prepare a layout map as follows:
- a) From the View menu choose ”Layout View.”
- b) Select a desired template for the layout and click “Finish.”
15. Edit the layout to add a name and other desired information.
- a) If the Layout Toolbar is not displayed it can be turned on in this area: View-Toolbars-Layout.
